We have a portable pc. We have a licence access 2007 (about 250, 300 euro). We can't buy anymore version ms access 2000 on the market. For reason of interchangebility with the default used version on other pc we need to install a copy of ms access 2000. This version (the old one, 2000) should be default (at startup and while working). Is someone experienced with two available versions of ms access on one pc ? Tips and Trick and where to pay attention for.

Regards.

Hi,

You can have 2 or more versions of MS Access running on any PC.

What I have found is that the oldest version should be installed first.
Then, as you install additional versions, select custom install and select allow previous versions to remain.

I normally select 'Allow' to MS Access, but not to any other of the word products such as Word or Excel.

Regarding what version of Access starts as a default, my experience shows that the last version of MS Access used (Started and Ended) will be the default for the next time Access is started.

I solve this by using shortcuts to the proper version of MS Access that I desire.

To make MS Access 2000 your default at startup, you might write a small MS Access 2000 mdb that does nothing more than start and then exit.
Now create a shortcut to the proper MS Access Version and the small Access program.
Finally, place this shortcut in your PC Startup folder and this should set the default to MS Access 2000 each time the PC is started.

Sample startup shortcut:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\MSACCESS.EXE"

Shortcut to Start an App:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\MSACCESS.EXE" "C:\Program Files\my folder\MYAPP.mdb"

ShortCut using unique Work Group Security file:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\MSACCESS.EXE" "C:\Program Files\my folder\MYAPP.mdb" /WrkGrp "C:\Program Files\my folder\MySecurity.mdw"

Hope This Helps,
Hap...

Hap,

I am waiting for the portable to install the versions on. So I didn't test it for the moment, but your info seems valuable.

Hap's advice about installing oldest version first is repeated in many places; also usually suggested is to install each version in its own folder.

Allen Browne has an excellent paper on converting to 2007, what to expect, etc. that you might want to look at:
