accesing email using sockets???

I'd like to acces the e-mail box(yahoo for example) using c++. This should involve socket programming (or so i think so).Please tell me how would you consider to solve this assignment.
I'm not too familiar with socket programming in visual C++, so if you know some documentation I would be grateful if you'd direct me to it.

OR .... You could pick up one of the free POP3 wra[[er classes from

http://www.codeproject.com

and let it do most of the work for you. Even if you don't use their classes in your C++ program, you can see how they do email with sockets in their source code.
