So I opened the table and created a new field called ID with and auto number as the field type . I sorted the last name column and as in Access 2003. I thought it would add unique numbers in order by last name. Not only did it not do that ( it gave unique ID by ordinal position added to the database. but it also gave everyone with the same last name the same Unique ID ? so n9ow there are 4 Smiths, Jenny, Carrey ,and Lisa an Fred with the same unique ID and when do an update query on ID it gave them all the same email address????? How in the world can that happen?

You should have created a new table with the additional field and then appended all of the records.

the query messed up. the table was made correct but the query showed several people that had the same last name with the same ID.
