As a teacher I got MSnet Academic for around US$100.
I have written an application that is commercial (will sell to schools). Not much money in it, if any. But a lot of fun for me, and makes me a better teacher of IT.

I can see advantages in changing to Delphi. Can't find the licence on the web.

Are there any restrictions on using apps made with an academic license?

TIA
Jim

Delphi comes in different flavours. This info is from Delphi 6 and below, don't know if there are some minor changes.

You have the personal edition estimated price $100.
Very limited, you can make applications and distribute them but you don't receive the source code of the VCL, so you can not modify the delivered components. You can connect to desktop databases like dbase, access and paradox. If you make an executable file you can distribute or sell it, although don't expect to become rich with it.

The proffesional edition estimated price $1000. You get the source code, you get the local interbase server & client and you can connect to more databases. You can make connections to RDBMS like Interbase. I am not sure about Oracle and SQL-server.

The Enterprice Edition estimated price $3000, if you want to make real money. Everything is in it. Installshield, QuickReports, Servers to connect to MsOffice applications, Internet components, A 5 license Interbase Server.

I once read a comparison between VB and Delphi. It was Delphi 4 x VB, at that time the highest version of Delphi was the Client Server Suite (now enterprise edition).

The cost was $400 for VB and $2500 for Delphi but they had to aquire a lot of 3rd components for VB to (report generators etc..) to pass the Database tests.
To keep VB standing against Delphi the cost of 3rd components would pass the $2500.
I think it was PC-Magazine comparison and Delphi came out as the VB Killer. No hastles with run-time dll's that make the VB based application fulnerable or useless.

Delphi you copy the .exe and it runs. I have run my applications on XP, NT, ME, 95 and 98 and they all run without a problem.

Hope this gives some clues, for more info

I would say that any Standard / Personal edition above D4 does NOT allow you to distribute executables.

Steven, are you saying that the only way to make any money from programming is by writting Database type Applications?
I think the trick may be to think of somthing new that people will want, whatever it is maybe even a game!.

Steve..

Very helpful. Thank you.

Steve

Personal edition allows no commercial use.

Cheers

Unfortunately a lot of people think that delphi is a database programming language, which is it definitely not. I started with Turbo Pascal and have done a lot of programming in small to medium size applications that in most cases didn't have a database. The same applies to Delphi you can use it for any kind of application, especially the scientific kind with a lot of calculations. Database programming (using 3rd party DB systems) in delphi I just started about 4 years ago. I started with programming way back in 1986.

Even an academic bought version of Delphi Pro ., Ent. or Studio also does not allow commercial use.
