I am currently using M.B. MSI-6368 which comes with onboard audio VIA AC97 codec running on XP professional edition. It was no problem with the sound output. The latest audio driver is what I am using is ver6.14.1.3870 VIA. However, when I want to try to record sound via microphone, it doesn't work. I had another machine got the same problem with same on-board VIA AC97 audio. I can't playback the sound I recorded even the sound driver seemed to work for output sound. Does anyone has the same issue?? I did also try to both enable & disable BIOS legacy on-board audio but still no much help. Please let me if anyone has the same problem with using on-board VIA AC97 audio, thanks!!

Hi,

First of all, are you sure the sound is being recorded at all? Double-click the volume icon in your system tray, select Options/Properties, click the Recording radio button, and make sure "Microphone" (or smth. similar) is selected as the input. If it isn't, you're not recording your sound.

If you have this properly set, and still don't hear your sound played back, check the volume control panel again to make sure your output isn't muted or turned all the way down. Also, needless to say, if you want to use your AC97 onboard sound, leave it enabled in BIOS!

Hope this helps,

Yes, I di check all the possible stting and I was so sure the input was mic selected. The volumn was turning to the max. I checked the BIOS AC97 on-board aduio enabled. I can hear all the sounds in Windows OS such as listening MP3, all default windows sound and play *.wav files. But just can't record sound and playbeck. Do you think this is HW problem or windows OS issue, pls advise, thanks!

yes, for sure. I tested my beand-new mic at the different machine. It works without any problem. What do you think hte problem would be??

Hello, I actually was just logging on to ask a question in this same forum regarding something very similar.
My motherboard is the MS-6738, but it also comes with the onboard VIA AC97 card (labeled "Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller"), and I'm also running on XP professional edition.
I can get output to my speakers fine when starting up my computer, but after a while it just cuts out. I'll usually be listening to music from anywhere between 3 - 30 minutes, and then it just cuts out. After that, I cannot get any speaker output until rebooting the computer. I have tried more then one set of speaker and got the same results.

I've found that the last couple of driver updates from MicroShaft have disabled the AC97 sound system. I just re-install the original drivers from the MoBo system disk.
