I have the AC 97 built in sound in my intel 810 motherboard. I have to reformat about every 6 months because my system is just SHITTY; too many reasons. However, usually this gets rid of bugs and I am good for quite a while afterword. THIS TIME however, it has remained "stable" for an extended period of time. Only problem is no sound. The driver disk that came with my system is now, mysteriously, useless for a correct sound driver. I have tried driverzone and dl'ed numerous drivers to no avail. My hardware profiles shows only a "PCI multimedia Device" with a "!" next to it. I cannot see in either harware profiles or multimedia any reference to the built in sound card! I am pretty capable at step-by-step troubleshooting, so I am open to suggestion. You guys (and gals) have helped me before, I am calling on your expert help again. Thank you in advance for even reading this in the first place; Thank You X 10 if you help me out. Yours, a busy fireman in ALABAMA! Do you know the manufacturer of the motherboard? That's the place to get the correct drivers. But, before you make any more attempts at installing drivers uninstall what's there from Device Manager and reboot. When rebooting, enter your bios (Del or whatever) and turn off the AC97 sound. Save and let windows load without any sound. Check Device Manager to make sure there are no references to it. Get the correct drivers as previously mentioned, reboot and enter the bios to reenable the sound, then install the drivers when windows finds it.

Easier said than done you say? If you don't know the motherboard manufacturer, open the case and look for some identifying names or numbers.

What OS are you running? It's unusual these days for any manufacturer of mobos with built-in sound devices not to offer a full array of drivers for various OSs. These are generally quite straight forward installations. Follow Smah's suggestion and let us know what happens...
