While absolute positioning seems to attract a lot of 'bad press', it does have a time and a place, so...

I'd like to hear what people think about using absolute positioning with ems, and any negative points that they can think of.

Assuming ems were used for all units, a site built using absolute positioning should be fairly scalable, so I'm wondering why more people don't do it.

Thanks!
Dan

Not sure really.
I don't use absolute positioning much. Though the job I am on right now uses it. I haven't found it to be that much of a problem.

I think the difficulties come when people use it to fix things in place because that is what they are used to. They haven't quite got into "that" way of thinking about webpages if you know what I mean.

What you say about ems makes sense, not tried it though. I'm not sure how well it would work in the real world.

Perhaps I'll give it a try :)

I simply don't like it because I like the elements on the site to interact with each other. Meaning that I like to have a few pixels bigger/smaller header and I don't have to change half the code for the rest of the site. I suppose if you have a very fixed design you might want to use it, still I am unsure why someone would prefer it over normal document flow. Also, I have seen numerous problems with selecting text inside absolutely positioned containers in IE. Those are my reasons.
