Absolute Minimum Hardware/OS for Oracle

I currently need to create and run a small subset of a production system that will be accessed by no more than 2-3 persons with negligible transaction volume. The full system is running on Solaris 10 on a dual UltraSparc box with 2GB RAM.

Can anyone suggest from experience an inexpensive minimum configuration that would allow me to run something like this? My own simplistic understandng leans towards a PC running Linux. Also, does anyone have an idea of legal Oracle license costs for something like this?

Chris,

I believe that the reasons that no one has responded to your inquiry since you posted it yesterday is because there are no "Absolutes" in formulating a response for you.

We could all propose a "minimum configuration" that would technically "run" Oracle, but would it be an appropriate recommendation for your needs?...Perhaps not. This is a case for contacting your/an Oracle Customer-Service Representative and soliciting advice from her/him.

If it were me, I would use as similar a peice of equipment as possible, Ultrasparcs as slow as 167Mhz were made and are available on ebay, a dual 3000 with 'enough' disks (a site specific value)may be the minimum.

By using as similar a machine as possible, it should be bug for bug compatable with the current box
