abreviated dialling value's ~P and ~W

Abreviated dialling has a ~P for Pause and ~w for Wait, pause is obvious it will pause , W value how do you use that is waiting for response ?

please help as the avaya documentation is always full of undocumented features

Abbreviated Dialing Special Character: allows
users to enter an associated special character
[~, ~m (mark), ~p (pause), ~s (suppress), ~w
(wait for dial tone), or ~W (wait forever)]
when programming an abbreviated dialing list
entry.
