Hi,

I have no experience with programming in java. At the moment I am playing with some java chatrooms but, so far, I didn't found one that offers everything I need.

How difficult is java to learn? I have reasonable knowledge of Perl and PHP, good knowledge of Javascript and Flash action scripting.

Is java totally different from these languages?

Or is this a difficult thing to answer?

Ron

IMHO You either have the ability to program or you don't, and no amount of tech yourself books will help you. The language you choose to program in is irrelevant. Using Java is again in my opinion easy.

Since you have experience in programming learning Java should be easy for you and in theory should hold no problems.

I went from PHP to Java. It took me a while to get used to the object model and the strong typing. I suggest spending extra time on those. All in all, it took a bit more time than learning PHP. As William put it, though, if you have the ability to program, you should be able to program in Java.

I've been studying Mughal & Rasmussen "A programmers' guide to Java certification", and feel comfortable recommending it. On the other hand, I found Sun's tutorial really annoying, especially bc of their ugly code (ok, so I'm a maniac about clean code...).

Thanks guys,

I agree with both of you if you like programming and you got a certain feeling for it you can learn whatwever language.

The thing here is that probably I will not use Java a lot. I need it for this specific thing (the chat rooms). I don't want to spend hours learning java. I recectly picked up php and it didn't took long before I could program scripts for relatively complex databases with other features etc.

If this will be the same with java then I will dive in it immediately but if you guys think it takes a completely different approach then for example the languages I mentioned then I have to think twice and wait till I got some more time.

Thanks agian for the responses and the suggestions.

Ron
