Hi all! We have been experiencing a problem lately with our IMail Server. We were running NT4 SP6a and recently upgraded to Win2k SP4 and now about every 3 days our outgoing mail just stop. we check the queue and there sits about 300-400 messages waiting to be delivered. incoming still works fine. thought it might be the nic so swapped it out with a brand new 3com. thought it might be SP4 so rolled it back to SP3 and still same thing. tried a 3rd time without any service pack and same thing. Anybody got any ideas?

thanks

I don't know why, but sometimes you have to stop and start the i-mail services. This takes care of the problem, but I wish I new what caused the problem. Try this and see what happens.

If you are running both Imail SMTP service and the Microsoft SMTP service try shutting down the Microsoft one--Imail doesn't need it and it seems to cause problems at times. Also I have found that my Win2k servers in general run better if they are rebooted weekly or even daily. I use the scheduler to run a little batch file that uses the shutdown.exe file from the resource kit to do that painlessly at night.

CHESTNUTR is correct. Servers need to be shut down once in a while. Try that also. Here's a star for you chestnutr.

I am currently having a similar issue. every 2-3 hours IMail quits send or recieveing mail to/from external sources. I stop and start the services, then it works fine for a couple hours. Any ideas???

We figured out the problem a little while back. i forgot to post the fix. if i remember correctly, the IWEBCAL service in the IMAIL Administrator needs to be stopped unless you use it. Also, select the +sign next to services, go to monitor, and make sure only SMTP, POP3, and que manager are checked. if you use anything else, let me know and i will see if it has any effect on this issue.

iMonitor has a big where it will use up all the SMTP connections outgoing mail won't be delivered.
iMonitor is full of bugs from what I've read, I'd recomend investing in ipsentry to do this job for you and stop iMonitor.

I figured out the problem, We had relocated our Mail server to a colo office for greater bandwitdh. At that time I changed the DNS server entry on the machine but not in the IMail SMTP setup. Eventually our Original service provider noticed that my server was still requesting DNS updates, so it blocked our mail server. The server would use DNS cache for previous domains but wouldn't be able to resolve new domains. Eventually the que would fill and SMTP would stop.

As an FYI, imail has issues when you have two DNS servers in the DNS server field. If the 1st one stops responding it'll go to the 2nd one but won't see MX records (I think thats the issue) I ran mine for months with out incident but saw alot of posts about this on the imail mailing lists.

So if it looks like DNS problems, stop the SMTP service, remove both DNS servers, type one back in, and start the service.
