I have been using many of the previous threads to work on my problem over the last week. I have run spybot S&D, cwshredder, microtrends, and ad aware se. Each program finds and removes tons of spyware, but when I re-boot, still can't get rid of about:blank and sexygirls plugins. I'm using Microsoft ME and Internet Explorer 5.5. I tried to download Microsoft antispy but won't install until I upgrade to IE6, so I downloaded that and tried to upgrade, It appears upgrade sucessful and I'm running IE6.0 sp1, but when I try to install Microsoft anti-spy, says I need to have at least ie6.0 or greater. I'm getting pretty discouraged. Any help would be appreciated. I did run HIJACK this which does show a log file, I can attach to this thread? Also, I shut down system restore before running any spyware removal programs.
Thanks,
Kelly

Kelly,

Post your log file...and we will help you. You can't install MS Antispyware on a ME box.

Erik,

Thanks for the info on ms antispy on me. I will post the hijack log file.
Thanks,
Kelly

Yeah, Ms Antispyware will only run on 2000, XP, or 2003. So, Hijack this is a good idea if you have used the other tools that you mentioned, and yes, you will need to turn off system restore.

See thread760-943407 for About:Blank, but let's give Hijack This a go!

Hope this helps,

Erik

Are you dealing with the one that includes se.dll? If so I do have a fix that you can try.

Are your registry and data backed up?

I ran up against one last week that was parts of 3 days attempting to find the reinfection method and finally wiped the registry and reinstalled the OS and programs. Mine was 98SE and the reinstall was about 30 minutes. So you may want to consider that option even though your reinstall will be longer.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

If you happen to come up with an about blank that involves an se.dll file, you have to use a program called startdreck on 9x systems to find the root infecting file. It has changed from being a dll file which dll compare might show up to a process with a variety of extensions.

A small registry cleanup file is probably needed too.
