Running BE version 8 on NT4. Tried to do a long erase of a DLT tape, took too long so I aborted the job. Now I'm stuck with the job as 'abort pending' but does not seem to abort. Help menu suggests 'edit/kill' but cannot find 'edit'?? Any help apreciated.

Been stuck here before myself. I have tried to stop services, and when that would not work, tried shutting down server. When that didn't work, then had to power down server.
Good Luck. :) A+ MCP

The only way around this is to reboot the server - Has anybody ever tried waiting to see if it does eventually reboot?

Have you tried ejecting the tape and reloading the tape (or the other way around)?

We use an autoloader, and it steadfastly refuses to give you the tape back when this happens....) ... Thinking back to when I've had this problem on a single DLT drive, power cycling the drive should get you your tape back, but it doesn't sort out the software - it still stays on the 'Abort pending' message....

Just as a follow up on this one...
I did try to eject the tape manually, but was unsuccessful, also tried to get Backup exec to eject the tape, but you guessed it 'eject pending'. Went into Control Panel, Services and stopped all services related to Backup Exec, and then restarted them again. However, 'abort pending' and 'eject pending' were both still there. Again, went into the services and stopped all associated services. When I started them again, Backup Exec was unable to communicate with the tape device. Was just about to reboot the server, but as a last check tried to launch Backup Exec and it started successfully with all pending jobs cancelled.
Will seriously consider doing a full erase again :)

I just stepped into the network admin position at my school district and I can answer the question asked earlier - Yes, we have waited to see if it will eventually stop. May 2000 was the last time the software says it did the nightly backup of our data. So the answer I believe is NO, it never does stop completely.

I had an abort pending due to aborting a virus update. Aborted on a friday morning, by the following Monday it was gone. :) So I guess it takes more than 8 hours and less than 3 days, to finally decide to "go away".

This worked for me: -

Manually stop the Backup exec services in the control panel
Try to run backup exec answering cancel to everything until it closes
Manually start the services again starting from the bottom one working your way up
Now run the backup exec and ...... bingo all abort pending have gone

Thanks to g_eldridge for the idea

I agree with cjackson. All I did to eliminate the "abort pending" was to stop and restart the BE services.

Hi!
You must reply to the notification in Alerts tab that says "please remove the media from the drive", than the job will be aborted.

Bamsen, that's true if you have the job set to auto-eject when finished. Except that with the problem we're all having, backupexec doesn't even get as far as sending an alert before it locks up.....

Is it really that important to do a long erase?? If I were you I'd do a Quick Erase. They run in like 5 min or less and I have yet to have one hang.
