I'm confounded by the level of effort required to enable email notifications in such popular programs as BackupExec, Symantec Antivirus and SQL Server.
As a tech support, I'd like to enable these functions for my clients, but almost none of them have Exchange, and it seems like the only way to enable email notifications otherwise is to have Outlook or Outlook Express loaded, and open, on the server.
Yes, we can restrict incoming mail, but it's just not "cricket" to have Outlook sitting there open on a server.
Can we start Outlook or Outllok Express as a service so that at least the server can be logged out, and Outlook isn't sitting there wide open?
Are there other ways to achieve my goal of being able to EASILY set up email notifications?
