Can anyone tell me where the settings for the Abend log are set? My server has abended a fews times today and it is not appending to the abend log in the sys directory. It restart the server, but does not log the dump.

Typically an abend doesn't restart the server.. at least not with default settings.

How do you know it abended? Did you get errors saying that?

If the abend.log file is corrupt, you could always delete the old one and let it create a new one.

Hi,

if the abend has to do with the stroage driver it can be, that no abend.log is written to sys:\system\abend.log

Normally then the system trys to write it to the dos partition c:\ or c:\nwserver

The settings for the abend handle is:

set auto restart after abend =

This settable parameter controls what the server does after an abend. The values 0 - 3 have the following behavior: 0 - do not try to recover from the abend. 1 - (default) For software abends, NMIs, and Machine Check Exceptions: attempt to recover from the problem, down the server in the configured amount of time, and then restart the OS. For other Exception Abends, suspend the faulting process and leave the server up. 2 - For all software and hardware abends, attempt to recover from the problem, down the server in the configured amount of time, and then restart the OS. 3 - For all software and hardware abends, do an immediate restart of the server.

I have "set auto restart after abend" = 0. Both of my servers never append to the log file and for the most part always restarts the server and I cannot figure out what went wrong. Can I still retrieve the log file from the c:\nwserver directory? And is it called abend.log?

Hi,

if the system still reboots equal if "0" is set, then it sounds more like a hardware problem and the Server itselv reboots and not the software (netware)

Is this a compaq/HP ? Is ASR enabled ? If yes, disable it.

Did you searched for the abend.log unter c:\ or c:\nwserver ?

Yes. It is a Compaq. I could not find the abend.log in that directory. Where would I find the ASR setting?

On a compaq, you should be able to run CPQIML.NLM and see a log of any hardware system events. If it was an ASR Reboot, it will say so. If you don't have CPQIML, you need to go to HP.COM and download and install the Proliant Support Pack.
