I am trying to log into my messaging module to change my ip address.

I tried intercom 76 through a manual dial and the modem in my pc will connect, it just does not do anything. Stays connected but if I hit enter or anything it just sits there staying connected but does not say anything. No prompt, etc. Tried both 9600 and 19200, 8N1, error correction on and off, compression off, etc. Using hyperterminal on win2k pro machine.

I have a serial to phone plug cable so I tried to use that. Our notebook only has usb. the only computer within reach of the cable is our server - win2k3. Got everything hooked up and realized that win2k3 does not have hyperterminal.

Now what?

Please help. The intercom76 semed to work easily, but I can try and find a notebook with a serial port. I am not exactly sure of where the cable came from. Could be from a battery back up. Not really sure. dont know if the pin-out is the same.

more detail - ACS r4.0 has remote/backup/upgrade card in Slot 2. Messaging r7 has a 6 port card in slot 1.

Do I need to assign anything to the modem on messaging module?

If it is true than ext 76 is the ACS remote card and **3 is the messaging card, then I can connect to ACS (with no prompts, but at least it connects) but I cannot get anything to connect or even handshake on the Messaging. It just says "modem is in use....try again later...goodbye

I am not sure that the connector I have is a 355a. It is a db9 to rj-45 (actually only a 6 pin). I dont know the pinouts on it though.

But, from my first post, you can see that I could not try it because my notebook doesnt have a serial port and the nearest computer that would reach does not have hyperterminal.

So I am stuck with the modem idea for now. I will take the cable home and check the pinouts with my meter but in light of the "able" computer issue, I can't use it anyway.

Thanks.

Hi kdifs,
Any terminal program should work. Hyperterminal is available for free download. I'm sure Microsoft has it for download as well. Even a DOS version of HA5 should do it.

The 355A adapter is available from Avaya or a dealer near you - or the web. Your adapter may work, or not. There is a pinout posted on the forum if you do a search. The Avaya part has some protection built in (I looked in mine).

Intercom 76 is the extension number for the modem in the Partner ACS, not the Partner Messaging.

To access the modem in the Messaging, you need to call the auto attendant and dial **3.

There are adaptors for USB to 9 pin serial at just about any computer store, but unless you custom made the 9 pin to rj45, it most likely will not work. The 355a adaptor will work, but I think they cost too much. The best bet is to build your own 9 pin to rj-45... or just dial in through the modem.

If you want to make your own, here are the pin-outs:
Code:
		        rj-45
PIN 1	ORANGE 2	CD
PIN 2	GREEN 5	RD
PIN 3	YELLOW 6	TD
PIN 4	BLACK 3	DTR
PIN 5	RED 4	SG
PIN 6	BROWN 7	DSR
PIN 7	WHITE 8	RTS
PIN 8	n/a CTS
PIN 9	BLUE 1

Excellent. Thanks.

My problem with the **3 is that it clicks and about 30 seconds later it says "the modem is in use... try your call again later...goodbye"

So, what would cause that? I can't find any settings that would affect the modem.

Hi Rob,
Connect via the RS-232 and be done with it. Get the adapter and make your life easier.

making one as we speak. Still concerned as to why the "modem is in use" on the vm.

Thanks.

Rob

Possibly the modem is defective, system needs a restart. Make sure you are not in admin when you try this, only one admin method is allowed at one time. I am not sure what error you may receive.

ok, either I am an idiot, my cable doesnt work, or the module has a problem.

I wired a db9 to an rj45 (cat5) jack.
The colors on the db9 did not match up to yours but I went by the labeled pin assignments on the plug (I had a cable I wasnt using)
The cat5 jack has 110 punchdowns on it and the order is: 21354687 I used it as labeled figuring it was out of order for crosstalk. tried it on 2 diff machines and I still cannot connect via rs232 port

rebooted the system and still get the "the modem is in use" error on **3

I didnt want to have to order the avaya part, but I guess I will. I would rather dial in, but at this point I will take what I can get.

If it makes you feel any better, the Avaya part is cheaper than messing around with making your own. It also includes surge protection as I've mentioned earlier.
I did make one in a pinch as the stores were closed and it works. It is used for SMDR reports in a fixed application.

SUCCESS!!!!
The part about me being an idiot was the correct answer above.

I did not check the wire type of the serial cable I used and so I was punching stranded wire down to the RJ45 jack. Continuity test revealed problems so the fix was easy.

Logged in and changed IP address.

Thanks for all the help!!

Still dont know why modem is in use.
