We have a Sun450 that will be used to implement a LDAP directory service. This of course means that there will be many disk reads and very little writes. We have an A1000 disk controller and Veritas. I'm not up to speed on the A1000 and was wondering if it was necessary to stripe the disks. I thought the A1000 automatically took care of this in a RAID 5 configuration. As you can probably tell, I'm not up to speed on RAID 5/ striping either so I would appreciate any other hints on the best way to configure this system.:) The OS is Solaris 8 and we have Raid Manager 6.
Thanks!

rm6 will do RAID 5 with a A1000 without veritas volume manager, a A1000 has a 20 meg NVRAM cache so write performance will not be an issue for you, so long as your writes are less than 20 meg.

reads in RAID 5 do striping, as always RAID 10 (1+0) will be faster but use more disks. I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Try to avoid veritas, it's more of a hinderence in this senerio than a help.

Raid Manger 6.2.2 will allow you to stipe the A1000 to your requirements. Remember to get the latest product patchs from sunsolve too. You will need them.
