A way to suppress splitterwindow bars?

Hi, I'm wondering if there is a way to:
(1)suppress the splitter window bars in between two views so that the two views look like one big view.

-OR-

(2)make the splitter bar slimmer than the default.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
