I'm looking to head towards the networking/admin sector and am wondering what path to take for the certs. I have a couple years experience with help desk and administering small to medium LANs.

One path that I am looking at is:

A+
Network+
CCNA
CCNP

What sort of recommendations and experience do you have with these, the career opportunities and the logical path to get there?

that path looks like a good plan. With your experience, you should be able to collect some study resources and do it all thru self study. the key is research. Start building your library of study materials and you should do fine. good luck.

Unless you are going to administer a completely Microsoft-free setup, I think it would be helpful for you to get at least an MCP. I know that although some of us sometimes dislike Microsoft, one cannot deny that they are all over the place and administrators are in demand. I agree with glister, you can probably do it all through self study and save a considerable amount of cash in the process :) .
