A time out occurred while...

Hello Guys,

I've noticed some really slow performance on an application which is backed by a SQL Server database and it all seemed a little stange so thought I would take a look through the server logs, and it appears SQL Server is throwing a large number of error messages, all saying.

A time out occurred while waiting for memory resources to execute the query. Rerun the query.

This is running SQL Server 2k5 Workgroup Edition. The system I'm running it on is by no means beefy but I would have thought it would be juicy enough to support it.

Whats causing this error? Is it just somthing software related and the SQL server doesnt have enough memory allocated too it? or is it that the 1GB RAM simply isnt enough and could use boosting to a few more GB?

At first guess I would guess that 1 Gig of RAM isn't enough memory and that you are waiting to long for memory to be cleared for reuse.

Thanks Denny,

Perhaps my first port of call is to stick another GB or two of RAM in the box and see what happens, if that doesnt fix the issue then we can try again with somthing else.

I would agree, that's probably an excellent (and inexpensive) first step.

Hi Denny,

Well, I underwent a memory upgrade on the system last night and its been running for the past 12 hours ot so and I've not yet recieved any errors from my applications or SQL Server which is an excelent sign, the server also seems much quicker and more responsive.

Looks like that solved the issue, thanks for your help.
