START--->RUN--->ftp 172.15.12.14
I enter the username
and passwd
massage show I'm logged in
cd homework (mane of my subdirectoy) where I want to copy
my file to)
bin
hash
put C:\zipcodes zipcodes

what am i doing wrong here?
also what's the difference between a text file and a binary file? thanks in advanced

Don't know what you're doing wrong - you didn't say what error/problem you are getting!

Re. text/bin :-

text :- a text file (!), ie human-readable
bin :- a binary file (!!), ie anything else (program, image, database, word, etc).

More specifically, when transfering a text file, certain conversions may occur (eg a <LF><CR> end-of-line combination may be converted to just <CR>), but the contents of the file should be viewable on all systems.

A binary file will be transferred 'as-is' but may not be useable on both systems (eg transferring a DOS executable to a unix system will result in a file that can't be executed there, but transferring it on to another DOS machine & the program will run OK).
One by one, the penguins steal my sanity. X-)

Hi sahaguna,

a simple one, but make sure you have the correct permissions to create a file in the subdir on the server.

You don't need the C:\ in your put command. Just make sure you're in C:\ and put zipcodes zipcodes. I assume your wordpad file is saved as text and not as a Microsoft Word document - make sure that it is if not, then you won't need the bin, just transfer it as an ASCII file. HTH.
