I get the following errors when trying to add the UM role:
--------------------------
A Setup failure previously occurred while installing the HubTransport role. Either run Setup again for just this role, or remove the role using Control Panel.

A Setup failure previously occurred while installing the Mailbox role. Either run Setup again for just this role, or remove the role using Control Panel.
---------------------------
Both of these roles are installed and working fine. I'm afraid to uninstall and reinstall them for fear of breaking them. Any advice?

Did you try reinstalling the UM role?

If so and it failed just the same, have you tried rebooting the server, and then trying installing the UM role again?

If you're absolutely sure that the HT and MBX roles are working correctly, you can tinker with the registry to see why they are flagged as incomplete.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\v8.0 has an entry for each role that is installed.

If any of the role containers have a Watermark or Action key, this can be the reason why the UM install is failing. Again, if you're SURE the HT and MBX roles are working fine, and you've got a backup of the server, you could delete the Action and Watermark keys, then the UM should install without burping.

Yeah, the server was just rebooted. I tried several times with the UM role.. same error.

Thanks for the registry key, I'll try that.

As a last resort you could even remove all roles and put them back in again though of course you'd need to back up stuff first!

Nope, that did the trick. got rid of the watermark info in the registry and good to go now.
