hey folks,

I've been installing SQLServer 2000 personal edition several times on different pc, but i am stuck when i install it in one of my friend's pc.. here is my friend's pc configuration:

Pentium 4 1.5G
256 RDRAM
40G HD partitioned 10-30
win2k professional edition
no network card:

I got this problem during setup :
"A service control operation failed for the MSSQL Server service: 267
The directory is invalid"

I already installed the same software on win98 pentium III without network card and twas working...

any sugestions?....or does anybody encountered the same and did some work around?

thanks,

Other Devices
• Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later.
• Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP have built-in network software

Does your friend have IE version 5.0 or later? And that last part makes it look like a network card IS needed, at least that's my interpretation.

egamosquito,

I have a question for you. Are all those PCs you installed personal edition on, licensed for the software. It is not free and the license agreement is clear that Personal Edition can be installed by organizations that are licensed for Standard or Enterprise Edition. If you are installing MSDE on these machines, they must be licensed also because they have the right software or you must have the proper software that licenses you to distribute an application using MSDE.

I recommend you verify licensing. If you and others are using unlicensed software, you could be in for a big financial penalty and possibly jail time.

If you want to get the best answer for your question read faq183-874 and faq183-3179.

Thanks for bringing that up Terry. Especially since most people aren't aware that Microsoft's new EULA (End User Licensing Agreement) gives them the right to retrieve information from your computer to see which Microsoft software you have loaded. They can then check it against their records and see if it's licensed or not. It's their method of enforcing DECA.
