I get about 50-200 times per day.

That is really annoying.

System: WinXP+SP2, Norton Antivirus 2007 (version 14.0.4.1)

I've read several forums about that problem, but still didn't find any civilized solution (I don't want to disable protection, I want to disable only those alerts).

It was almost impossible to watch a film, because it always stopped when that alert message (about blocked computer) popped up.
Even some games were minimized (ex, Quake2).

Lucky for me, I can see films now when I unchecked the option here:
Control Panel / Windows Firewall / Exceptions / Display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program
(I don't remember if that option was checked, or I had checked it myself)

Those messages still appears (and many), but at least they don't stop films now (and games are not minimized).

This year is the last for Norton Antivirus - I will never use it again, at least until there will be a way to turn off those annoying alert messages.

And don't tell me that there is an option inside Norton Antivirus, which turns off those alert messages. I studied all possible options there and I found no such option! I even did that several times (and still do, once per month :) ).
I still can't believe that Norton Antivirus has no such option (I want to disable only those alerts, not protection). I'm very disappointed.

Since the similar thread thread742-1346820 is closed I started a new one.

Hi Robai,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team responding to your post. You can indeed turn off the alerts in Norton Antivirus 2007. To do so, please follow the steps below.

1. Start your Norton program.

2. Click on Options > Norton Protection Center.

3. Under Alert Options:

* Uncheck Show AntiVirus alerts.
* Uncheck Show Firewall alerts.
* Uncheck Show Windows Updates alerts.

4. Click OK.

5. Close the Norton program.

Just to be on the safe-side, I would manually run LiveUpdate until it tells you that no more updates are available. I would then schedule a Full System Scan when you are not using your computer, just to make sure that you are not infected.

Please try this process and reply back and let me know if this resolved your issue.

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike.

Thank you for answer.

I didn't find "Show AntiVirus alerts" option.

I've made PrintScreens for you:

Norton Protection Center

Norton Protection Center \ Options \ General Settings

Norton Protection Center \ Options \ Advanced Settings

There is no other options!

I often run Norton LiveUpdate, but I almost never update WinXP (SP2 was integrated).

I have said that when the option
Control Panel / Windows Firewall / Exceptions / Display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program
was unchecked then my films don't stop and my games aren't minimized.
I was wrong!
It still sometimes happens!

I guess that it happens when I check the option (in Firewall) and uncheck it again. And it minimizes game or stops film (on alert) until I restart windows (I restart it only 1-2 times per week).
I'm too lazy to check that conjecture (I don't want to restart windows now), but if you will insist I will do it for you.

What do you mean by "Close the Norton program"? You mean pressing X, right? :)
BTW, is there any way to exit Norton Antivirus program (without CTRL+ALT+DEL)? I mean completely exit (but not uninstall)? I didn't find how to do it.

Hi Robai,

Thanks for the update.

As far as Windows updates go, I would advise you to install them, as they contain patches for critical security holes in Windows. Without these patches, no antivirus application will work perfectly.

Also, it is very important that you run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the latest application and definition files installed. Please manually run LiveUpdate multiple times until it tells you that your software is up to date. I would then advise you to set LiveUpdate to "Automatic."

After you have run LiveUpdate, and restarted your computer, please try the steps below to change the Alert Settings..

1. Open Norton AntiVirus 2007

2. Click on the "Options" button on the left window pane, and then click on "Norton Protection Center."

3. De-select the box that says "Show Security Status on Windows Taskbar."

4. Click "OK."

5. Next, I would advise you to run a Full System scan on your computer to make sure that you are not infected.

Please try this process and let me know if it resolves the issue.

Thanks,
Mike

Thank you for the solution, you got a star.

It indeed solved the problem.

I still got at least 2 alert messages, but this is not annoying, because 2 messages in 3 days is really not too many.

I was misled by the deceptive description.
The option "Show protection status on Windows Taskbar" should be replaced with "Show protection status on Windows Taskbar and show intrusion alert messages" or similar.

Or it better be different options:
"Show protection status on windows taskbar"
and
"Show intrusion alert messages"

Hi Robai,

I'm very happy to hear that you are back in business! Sometimes the UI in any software package can be confusing. I will pass this information along to our development team for future revisions and updates.

Take care,
Mike

I have got 5-10 more messages!
I hope that it will not turn to 50-200 messages per day.

So, actually I'm not sure if the problem is solved.

I can live with several messages per day, but I don't understand why do I get alert messages at all?

Maybe this is some kind of bug?

Hi Robai,

If you are still receiving alerts in your Task bar after turning off the notifications, can you please tell me what the alerts say?

You may want to manually run LiveUpdate, and then boot into Safe Mode and run a Full System Scan. Sometimes infections are embedded into system files which can only be scanned when in Safe Mode.

Please try this process and also let me know what the notifications say, and also the results of your Safe Mode scan after running LiveUpdate.

Thanks again,
Mike

Sorry for delay.

Today I finally did a full system scan in Safe mode.
No risks found.
In Safe mode Norton Antivirus didn't start at all (automatically). Is it normal? When I tried to start it then I was asked to do a full system scan and I did it.
BTW, when I restarted windows to Normal mode Norton Antivirus don't remember about made full system scan (it still shows that I need to make a full system scan). Why?

And I did LiveUpdate (it was up-to-date) jus before I restarted to Safe mode.

In security history I found only these 2 types of risks:
1)
Risk name: MS ASN1 Integer Overflow TCP
Risk level: High
2)
Risk name: MSRPC SrvSvc NetApi Buffer Overflow (2)
Risk level: High

Very rarely (1% of time, actually I noticed it only today) there is one more risk:
3)
Risk name: Portscan
Risk level: Medium

2-3 weeks ago have made some Screenshots:
Alert message popped up again even when I pressed "view details"

Security history
(for security reasons I deleted my IP address)

Hi Robai,

The risks that were found on your system are related to security issues with Windows, and are considered High Level risks.

I would first suggest that you run Windows Update and apply all available patches. Below are the links on our site that explain the infections and how to resolve them.

1)
Risk name: MS ASN1 Integer Overflow TCP
Risk level: High
MS ASN1 Integer Overflow TCP

2)
Risk name: MSRPC SrvSvc NetApi Buffer Overflow (2)
Risk level: High

MSRPC SrvSvc NetApi Buffer Overflow

After going through the steps to resolve these risks, please download the Norton Security Scanner and then run it in Safe Mode.

[link ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/tools/nss/NortonSecurityScan.exe]NortonSecurityScan Download[/url]

Please check out the documents I linked above and then download and save the Norton Security scanner and run it in Safe Mode.

Thanks, and let me know how it goes.

I had this identical message "a recent attempt to attack your computer was blocked" and it appeared dozens of times per day and was driving me nuts. I have NAV 2008. I did everything Symantec told me to do. (I wasn't impressed with their support.) I tried other advice on the Internet, and it still didn't go away.

Finally I installed ZoneAlarm (A free firewall) and it got rid of the problem! I've been going for over two weeks without a single annoying message from NAV. I thought I might have to turn off NAV worm protection because it seemed to be a overlap of functionality of ZoneAlarm but these two applications live together quite well.

I'm thinking I won't renew my subscription to NAV as ZoneAlarm seems to do everything I want and is free.

I understand that Norton Antivirus alerts me if it finds some security threat.
But it shouldn't alert me if I don't want that!

Ok, my computer is not safe, I agree with consequences and I will not blame NAV for that, but I don't want to be disturbed by those annoying messages!

And there is no way to avoid those messages unless you will decide to turn off some protections (I think that even then some alerts will pop-up).
