Hi there,

I'm about to start developing a database / solution for my local bike club - to keep track of the kids signing in for sessions etc.....

one thing I would like to investigate is the use of barcodes. having never worked with barcodes, I've done a little research - and I was just looking to see if my thinking is correct.

Code39 barcode is the most universal and simplest form of barcode for me to use (and i have managed to get a free font that is printing on my report no problem).

Now, If i develop my database as if i do not have a barcode reader - and require the user to enter the childs membership number in a field to sign them in - when i get my barcode reader, is it simply a case of scanning the barcode whilst in this field and it will populate the field with the number (member number) from the barcode?

many thanks for any help / advice you can give,

Neil

Providing focus is on the textbox at the time you click on the barcode reader, it makes no difference whether you manually typed in the number into the textbox or used the barcode reader. So yes to your question. I used barcode39 as its available free. I got going from this site, hope it helps

Only thing I'd look out for with barcode's is that some are generated with a trailing *, carridge return (there are others that I can't remember off the top of my head) so just be sure your application is able to handle the possible situations that might arise from this.

Hope this helps
