Ok, this is driving me nuts.

I currently have a SpeedStream 5660 DSL Modem/Router. The capabilities of the router are proving limited so I wanted to get another router to put in its place. I picked up a Linksys router/switch (BEFSR41 v2).

I have tried everything I can think of to configure the speedstream so its just a DSL modem; remove it from being a router. I've tried bridge mode, no go. I've tried keeping it as a router, but disabling dns, nat and dhcp, no go.

I have the new router configured as a dhcp and dns server. I'm able to talk within my LAN, but just can't reach outside to the WAN.

What do I have to do to put in a new router in place of an existing dsl modem/router?

thanks!

1. Connect the 5660 directly to a computer. Set the computer nic to IP 10.0.0.2 mask 255.0.0.0

2. Then open a browser to http:\\10.0.0.1

3. You will see a config summary from the 5660. on the left you will see a "change to bridge mode" (It might say change to router even though it is in router mode.)
click it and change the 5660 to bridge mode.

Exit your browser. Turn off the modem.

4. Now connect the Linksys router directly to your computer.

5. Set your computer's NIC to "Obtain an IP Address Automaticly." Do an IPCONFIG /release and then an IPCONFIG /renew, or right-click the connection icon and do a Repair.

6. In your browser, access the router setup at http:\\192.168.1.1
Set the PPoE connection and other values you need.
Do a soft reset of the router (hold the reset button for about 3 seconds and release). Turn off the router.

7. Connect the modem to the router's WAN port. Turn on the modem and let it stabilize. Turn on the router.

Thanks bC. Unfortunately, those are the steps I've been working - but did try your step sheet one by one but still wasn't able to get a connection.

Enet light:
One thing I've noticed is that the Enet light on the modem (speedstream) isnt' lit when I connect it to the WAN port of my router. Is this supposed to be this way?

PPPoE
You mentioned setting PPPoE .. the speedstream modem, was using a static IP, isn't this what I should be using instead of PPPoE. In either case, I treid both and neither worked.

VCI?
Also, I was reading the modem's manual and it says that I may need to set the VCI settings after changing to bridge mode, to suite my isp. It was set as 0/35 when I changed to bridge mode - router mode had 0/100. I tried 0/100 in bridge mode, but still it didn't work. Nor with 0/35. Not sure what VCI is though.

What could I be missing here?

Thanks for the help!

Cabling?

Is a different cable needed between the modem and the router's WAN port? I'm using the same cable that I was using between the modem and my hub, to connect the modem and my new router.

The hub has been taken out of the picture for these tests, I have my pc connected directly to a port on the router (fyi, its not connected to the uplink port).

I was able to get the Enet light to sparkle again using a different cable. But still, no go on the WAN connection.

I'm pulling my already thinning hair out here. ??

1. The enet light not lit is a symptom that you need a straight-thru and not a cross-over cable between the modem and the router. It sounds as if you have that sorted.

2. The VCI settings should be identical in any mode of the modem, router or bridge. I have never heard of them changing by selecting Bridge mode, but I guess it is possible. These values are set by the DSLM connection at the Central Office and router vs. bridge mode does not change the fact that only one set of values will work. If it works in router with VCI/VPI at 0/100 it would work as well in bridge mode. Call you ISP and ask what the settings should be.

3. It is possible that by entering other values in the command menu the router is not able to use the Bridge shortcut.

What you want:

DNS disabled
DHCP disbled
NATP disabled
Bridge mode enabled
SPI disabled

If you continue to have problems, the guys who monitor the Efficient user forum at broadbandreports.com know this modem cold, as do the folks in the SBC forum. Give them a try with your question.

You should also type 5660 in the little search box at the top right of the main page to see other comments already made about issues with the modem.

Well, it turned out that my ISP needed to set up my account, on their side, in bridge mode as well.

I didn't even think about that.

Do you have a take on that?

Thanks for all the help guys!
