Has anyone ever noticed that, on a fresh install of Lotus Notes, when the user detaches the file they end up with the Notes Data directory being the first directory to open up. Chances are they never change it and detach right into that directory - which leads to problems later one when they decide to clean up their files and delete software files from their Data directory (thus throwing out the baby with the bathwater).

Any ideas on how to change this to a different default directory - like My Documents, for instance? or some other Lotus Note directory that is less dangerous? The change would need to take place during the install process.

Thanks!

Hi,

Just after installation, open the Notes.ini and look for the "FileDlgDirectory" modify the direcory as follows for example:

FileDlgDirectory=c:\Temp

(Replace c:\Temp with the directory of your choice)

3 ways to do this:

1/
If you are doing an automatic installation you will have to make sure to include this in your installation script.

2/
If you install by hand you can modify this manually in notes.ini or simply detach a file one time before you hand the client over to the user. This is not really elegant of course.

3/ (*golden tip*)
Make a modification to the Notes mailbox template. Include an instruction that checks for the FileDlgDirectory parameter in Notes.ini. If it is set to the data directory, change it to something else, if it is not set to the data directory you can leave it. This script can run when the users opens the mailbox for example, or when he composes a memo.
This way you never need to think about this anymore!
You can even go beyond: if you want to encourage that people save their documents on a file server then you can always set the default path to the root of the fileserver for example!

Hope this helps!
