A DropDownList cannot have multiple items selected

I have a form with several DropDownList in it. The ddl1 selection decides the ddl2; The ddl2 selection decides the ddl3. once I tried to select items under ddl3, it blow out the error message "A DropDownList cannot have multiple items selected". I don't know what causes this problem and how to resolve it.
