When attempting to add a computer (Windows XP or Windows 2003 Server) to an existing domain on a Windows 2000 Server the following error is displayed:

A domain controller for the domain <domain> could not be contacted.

Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly.

This started after someone installed & uninstalled DNS on the 2000 AD box. You can ping the box and resolve it's name with tracert <servername>, but you nbtstat -a <servername> fails. It does have DNS and WINS set to the 2000 AD server. The 2000 AD server is NOT connected to the internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You said "This started after someone installed & uninstalled DNS on the 2000 AD box". Why would someone be doing this on a production box and are they still alive....

Revisit the dns setup on the server and fix if necessary.. The issue in joining machines to the domain (assuming that your dc's are all 2k) is based on the inability of the pc to resolve the fqdn and be authenticated.

Good luck
