Despite my strong feelings. I am starting to "buy" the idea
of certification for some people may be a good idea.
I have long programming experience but basically I wish to
leave pure programming and use my 'other' IT experience.
I have built my first PC in the early '80. I have repaired
several but I could use some further training.
Is A+ a value if I want to go back to a little more simple
life even if it pays less? Is the A+ market as bad as any IT
or is there some wiggle room ? I was also thinking about
security certification but I suspect more and more places
they will ask for advanced degrees and the need will limited for a few hundred people. I have 20+ years of
programming but no degree.

In my opinion, A+ is the beginning and the end if you want to do CompUSA-style PC repair/upgrade work. When you're certified you should feel comfortable with just about anything under the PC case. However, PC repair is generally seen as a stepping stone to networking jobs, so depending on your skills you may work out better leveraging your programming abilities into a DBA or report/scripting area of employment.
