I have made the decision to obtain my A+ certification (after being unemployed twice in 5 years and over 55 years old) to enhance my future employment. I have two study packages. the first is "A+ core & windows/dos exams 1998 with study guide & cd, and practice exams by Syngress Media/Osborne McGraw-Hill, the other is Cram Exam Personal Trainer, book and cd by Jones & Landes, Corolis Press, (1999). Are these materials still applicable, or should I upgrade. I've owned, rebuilt and built pcs since 1985.
Thanks

well i found a lil site named "passitnow.com"
its got free practice tests for almost every field , including A+ hardware and software. My only issue with them is while the questions test wether you actually know your stuff or not , they are very straight forward, unlike the actual cert questions that are usually situational.

As for as those particular books , im not familiar with them . I get most my info online :(

Hi Jock,

First, your books cover the old exam objectives. Visit

and get a copy of the latest objectives.. Your book is not necessarily out of date, just make sure you cover the new objectives.

Next, send an email to A+ebooks@tcat.net . An autoresponder will send you a link to download Tcat Houser's study guides for the A+ exams. These books are awesome. Get'em. They're free. 500+ pages. PDF format. Tcat is an amazing author with several books out. You'll see what I mean.

Get study guides from Cramsession. They are good.

These will get you started. Come back for more & ask questions... Good Luck!

The online stuff does help a lot, but if you happen to be like me, for whatever reason I seem to learn better from a book. I just obtained my A+ Certification last week, and though I used online resources as well, I purchased Mike Meyers All-In-One A+ Certification Exam Guide from Amazon. I was lucky and found a copy for about $25. If you're looking for a book, I would definitely recommend this one. He explains stuff very clearly, and it includes some good references for both parts of the test!

Best of luck to you on the tests!! :)

Thanks for the info. looks like I'm on my way.

The material you have will have limited information on Windows 98 and nothing on XP or 2000! You'll need to know W2K and it's significantly different from Win 9x. I have a really good book that covers all the stuff I'll need, but I also got my hands on a 1998 edition and it presents stuff differently--good history of DOS, different angles on hardware. Really helps me learn more deeply.
