I have a real scenario in my hands. I am trying to connect 2 routers and a switch and I want the whole infastructure to feed of the cable modem. I am using Router1 as my gateway, I connected the E0 to the cable modem. I have S0 from R1 connected to S0 from Router2 (R2) using a DCE/DTE cable and I want the remaining AUI on R2 (ethernet) to get the traffic out to the rest of the LAN. Any help would be greatly appreaciated considering that right now i cannot ping R1 at all. Thank you in advance.

Also R1 is running 10.2 and R2 is running 11.2 IOS releases. Thank you. :-D

Check the serial link.. SHOW Sx does it give you the UP notice? both the link AND protocol? Did you remember to put a clock rate statement in on the DCE side? Got a ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x for the default gateway?

Both protocolls and links are up. The default gateway on the E0 is not set (shouldnt it get from the cable modem?) clockrate is set as well for DCE

before you connect all the routers to the cable modem get the gateway address to cable's network. You can do this by typing ipconfig at the msdos prompt. Once you get the address set a default route pointing to that address.

Thank you rbaxter. I will try that. What happens though when the IP changes of the cable modem? And should I be able to ping, NAT and get all the other machines to the Internet after that?

Thank you all for your help so far

in your question you said you couldn't ping. Are you trying to ping from the router or from your workstation? Also what protocol are you running for your network? Also you should reverse the order of your routers.R2 should be connected to cable modem since it is running 11.2ios. Version 10ios does not support nat.If you upgrade your ios to version 12.1 (minimum) the router will be able to use dhcp to get its ip address from cable.

I just got IOS 11.3 and I am going to upgrade both routers to that. Will it get DHCP from the cable modem? Is 11.3 going to be enough for what I am trying to do?

Thank you in advance

no!!!
to get your ethernet ip dynamically you'll need ver 12.1. Also look into purchasing a 2514 router. Would make your life a whole lot easier.

I guess I need to find the 12.1 IOS version (sigh)

thank you all very much for your input
