_ref object-group name

Can someone tell me why the PDM seems to have created pairs of identical object groups; one with the name I want and one with "_ref" appended to the end.

Example:
object-group network printers
object-group network printers_ref

If I want to create object-groups by hand (via CLI not PDM) do I have to create the identical *_ref group too (I'd assume not).
