(On a personal note, I will be presenting two of the tutorials: "Enough Expect to be Dangerous" and "Weaving Multi-Threaded Applications." I certainly wouldn't mind a full house for my presentations. :) ) - Ken Jones, President

"Enough Expect to be Dangerous..", I like that ;)
As far as multi-threads...hmm, sounds suspiciously
highbrow to me.
I didn't make it to the last one and this one I see
is in Canada someplace. How about Wash.DC? Then I can
finally go.

Yes, when we were soliciting input for this year's conference, we came to the conclusion that several thousand people could attend if we could figure out how to hold it simultaneously in everyone's backyard. :) This is actually the first year that the Tcl conference has ever been held outside of the continental United States. Although some might claim that even this year's is being held in a suburb of Seattle. :)

There were several factors that led to the selection of Vancouver. A major one was cost. There were many complaints that the past 2 Tcl conferences -- which were held as part of O'Reilly's Open Source Conference -- were far too expensive in both conference fees and hotel costs. So this year, the conference committee made a concerted effort to hold costs to a minimum. The weakness of the Canadian dollar versus the US dollar helped to reduce costs substantially. Even the official conference hotel, the Crowne Plaza Hotel Georgia, is a very nice hotel that offered a conference rate less than many of the "budget" hotels near the San Diego conference site last year.

Another major factor leading to the selection of Vancouver is ActiveState's sponsorship (which is based in Vancouver). They're lending the seed money to handle all upfront costs of the conference, donating subtantial amounts of Jeff Hobb's time to organize it, providing additional free secretarial and logistics support, and offering use of their conference rooms for tutorial sessions. No other company stepped forward to offer such organizational support, so it was a strong incentive to this rag-tag bunch of volunteer conference organizers (myself included) to locate the conference in Vancouver.

Not that I took your comments as criticism, marsd. I just thought that you and others might be interested in why Vancouver was selected this year. Organization of next year's conference should begin shortly after the conclusion of this one. I'm sure anyone who would like to participate in its organization will be welcome, as would offers of financial or logistic sponsorship from interested organizations. - Ken Jones, President
