So I had 9i Installed and then someone installed 10g without creating a new local user account. I changed the varible in the registry for system path to be all 9i instead of 10g

D:\oracle\ora92\bin;D:\oracle\ora92\jre\1.4.2\bin\client;D:\oracle\ora92\jre\1.4.2\bin;D:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\bin;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.3.1\bin;C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.1.8\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

When I log in to sqlplus, it shows it is 9.0.6.0 but when I logout it shows that it is version 10.

Any ideas?

What do you mean by it shows ? What is it ?

you have to distinguish between database version and sqlplus version. My guess is that one is 9, the other is 10.

To find out, it will help if you show the output of a complete session in sqlplus.
Just logon, and type 'exit', and show the result here.

Hi Dr,

Which version do you want to use?

Modify the ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_BASE, etc... in the Windows System Properties..> Environment Variables, not the Registry. Then see if that cures it.

You can also create some scripts to run at the CMD to set the environment, then start everything from inside that.

Good Luck

Are we talking about a client or a server (with database) install?

Dr Seuss,

First of all, it seems very scary to me that "someone installed 10g" without:

a) co-ordinating with you [who appears to be the DBA] and

b) knowing how install Oracle software without badly disrupting the behaviour/performance of your development server.

Since the other person's bogus installation has compromised everything Oracle on your server, causing it to become unreliable, I would, if I were in your situation:

a) shutdown the server
b) backup all database datafiles
c) uninstall both Oracle 9i and Oracle 10g, ensuring that any references to anything Oracle in both the registry and in environment variable disappear, along with erasing any Oracle paths (i.e., ORACLE_HOME and its sub-directories),
d) re-install the version of Oracle that you want (ensuring that you specify that you do not want the installer to create a new Oracle database),
e) restart your Oracle instance.

If you choose this strategy, please let us know your outcome.
