Suppose I am acknowledging an 837 GS "HC" with a 997. The version on the HC functional group is 004010X098A1. So, if I am correct, X098A1 is simply an extension/definition to the 004010 837 standard, i.e., an X098A1 837 IS a 004010 837. So, is it incorrect to send a 997 with functional group version 004010? It seems inappropriate to put the version as 004010X098A1 on the 997 since technically no such extension exists for the 004010 997 transaction. Thanks in advance.

You should find out what version of the 997 your trading partner is expecting or negotiate the version you want to use with them

The X098 determines the type of 837 (Professional). The A1 indicates the addenda version. The 997 for all three versions of the 837 is 004010. There is no addenda for the 997 transaction at this time. Therefore, you are correct in sending a 997, version 004010 for the 837 version 004010X098A1.
