98 to XP and all is lost, HELP

I have a machine that had 98 on it. A friend updated to XP Home. Can't find outlook contacts. She went and bought and installed a new outlook. Still can't find the contacts. Where does it save the contacts at and what is the file extension.

Was the machine originally using Outlook Express or Outlook? See if this applies
