98 save settings problem

Hi There,
I've recently reinstalled my PC and all the application software. I installed Norton Systemworks first to help with uninstalling in the future and to correct windows errors after each install. I now seem to have reached a position where I can't save any settings such as screen definition or msconfig/disable startup items. After making the necessary change I reboot, but the system comes up exactly as it was. It looks like I've filled up some system area but I have no idea what. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, otherwise it's another reinstall. Not a small task.

Check the registry. Don't save settings at exit may have been enabled

I think I've solved this one. I got a load of stuff to check off the MS website and as I was working through it I noticed the graphics card driver had reverted to the Microsoft version instead of the vendors. All came up fine when I changed driver. Strange how it seemed to affect a lot of unrelated things though.
