I have a customer who has a copy of Norton 2005 trying to install it on a Win 98 4.10 system; Norton 2005's minimum system requirements are Internet Explorer 5.5 and the customer has 5.0. Would it be possible to upgrade her IE 5.0 to 5.5 on this First Edition of Win 98? I've been told it is not because of ActiveX and security update issues. Thanks!

ie 6 will also install - might as well have the latest version you can.

Warning: I STRONGLY do not recommend using Norton AntiVirus 2005 on Windows 98. It is a system resource hog that has been designed for use on Windows XP, and has NOT been optimised for use on Windows 98. It WILL slow down your overall system performance quite noticeably.

For a lean but effective anti-virus product for use on Windows 98, I recommend AVG 7.0 AntiVirus available from
They also have a free (and fully functional) version available at

My memory is not as good as it should be, and neither is my memory.

I have forgotten more than I can remember

Off topic, but I'd take J741's recommendation a step further - wouldn't use Norton AV on ANY machine. It IS a resource hogger full stop - brings XP to a halt just as efficiently as 98 (unless you have lots of RAM and powerful processor). AVG beats it hands down.

PS - Same comments apply to Macafee.
