9700 Sim Question regarding 3700 system variable, @idle_seconds

I am tasked with writing messages to the rear display of a workstation in the 9700 environment. The event that does this is to fire off when the system goes idle for a certain amount of time. We were going to use event idle_no_trans along with @idle_seconds to set the timeout length, but soon discovered that these features seemed to be limited to the 3700. Is there any way to accomplish this on the 9700?
