I am working on a new server 8.1 system. All of the phones are 9608s.

I have a couple of issues when I plug them in.

1. The first time I plug them in, they do not upgrade firmware. They boot up pretty quick and register no problem. If you reboot the phone, it does the upgrade from 6.20 to 6.22.

2. I cannot get the phones to grab files from anywhere but the control unit SD card. It doesn't matter what I put in the config as far as the http/tftp servers. I have tried setting it to the manager on my laptop. I have a http server on my laptop that I tried as well. It always pulls from the SD card. When I changed settings, I changed them on the server and the control unit.

The combinations I tried were:
1. http/tftp: my laptop IP
Phone file server type: custom
2. http/tftp: my laptop IP
Phone file server type: manager
3. tftp: my laptop IP
http: control unit lan1
Phone file server type: manager

Does anyone have any ideas on these issues? Upgrading 152 phones from the SD card will be painful.

I'm pretty sure that the 96xx phones will only use HTTP. Are you using DHCP to set the call server and file server address? Check the DHCP server's settings.

Adding a 242 Option
In addition to issuing IP address information, DHCP servers can issue other information in response to requests for different specific DHCP option numbers. The settings for each option are attached to the scope. 1600 and 9600 Series H.323 IP phones use SSON 242 to request additional information from a DHCP server. The option should include defining the address of the phone's H.323 gatekeeper (the IP Office) and the address of the HTTP file server.
