Okay I have a ATI Radeon Sapphire 9600 XT card (128mb) the fan on this card has begun to make strange noises, which I believe are reminisent of the fan dieing. On the top of the fan shell there are two screws which appear to remove the fan from a greater metal case. Does this make sense? That I can replace the fan without replacing the entire heat removal device?
Also where would I get a replacement fan from?

Hi Moldboy,

You would probably be hard pressed to find a suitable fan like to fit your card. Your best bet is to just replace the entire heatsink/fan assembly. They are usually attached to the vga adapter board with some metal clip things... i don't know what best to call them, but I'm sure you'll figure it out.

There are plenty of aftermarket heatsink/fans available for the ATI 9600 series, and since the cards aren't as popular any more, you should be able to pick up a cooler for reasonably cheap... say $10 or less (retail).

There's plenty of different ones out there, but here is a link to one example:

If there isn't excessive side to side movement in the fan it is probably that the bearing sleave is just dry and a couple of drops of oil will cure the noise.

Remove those grille screws, remove the three small screws holding the fan to the heatsink, remove the sticker on the reverse side to reveal the bearing, apply 2 drops of fine oil (all purpose sort) re-apply the sticker or a piece of insulation tape to seal the bearing, re-assemble.
Job done
It might be something you have to do every 8 to 12 months unless you particularly feel like shelling out for a new one.
