Just when you think an installation should be a breeze ...

I have a windows xp client machine on a windows network. I can see the Oracle server at the proper ip address. No matter what I do I cannot get a logged into the server.

Another server using odbc drivers 8.1.7 works like a champ. The error I think was 12521 - home now... And also a TNS error ...

Anyway, if you were to start from scratch and had to connect to an oracle 8i database, what driver would you use and where can I find it.

Thanks all for your help !

Hi,
It seems that you are using Transparent Application Failover (TAF).

You should not have INSTANCE_NAME set on the TAF tnsnames entries.
Instance Name would be used for the TNSNAMES entries generated that are in fact instance specific. TAF connections are not.
