i have the geforce 8800gt card and after a while of keeping the pc on the fan on the video card sped up alot and i was wondering if that was due to too much heat in the case? i have 3 fans and the cpu is watercooled. i shutdown my pc after that happened b/c i was going to sleep. the next day i turned it on and again it was the same thing. the fan to the video card was spinning fast. its the loudest thing in my case now. when i first built the pc which was a few days before this happened, the video card was quiet. why now is the fan working overtime even after it was cooled for a night and then started up again.

Make sure that the video card's fan and heatsink are dust free, and the heatsink is secure.

If those are ok, then check if the thermal compound between the cards' heatsink and chipset has oozed out.
If so, then replace it. Arctic Silver is recommended.

If that's ok and the fan has an adjustable speed controller, then reduce the speed if possible.

If that does not work or there's no speed adjustmant, then the fan may be failing.

Just something to help you look for a solution...

Is it the 6800gt card you have? There isnt a 8800gt card out.
