So, after spitting one page out (the first page I've seen come out of it) the 860dp jammed the second sheet. I pulled it out the front, tearing off a little corner and lodging it in the exit preheat sensor.
I've seen where this sensor is on the exploded diagram, but I have no idea how to get at it.

The printer says to open the exit cover, but I can't get at anything.

Any ideas?

One thing you could try is to get some card stock and push it into the preheater. This may dislodge any paper scraps and fix the message. This is an "official" way to fix the problem, and it usually works.

Here's a pic of what you need to do:

1. Open the front cover, open the exit cover, and remove the maintenance drawer A.

Slowly advance the paper by rotating the feed rollers, which are directly underneath the paper (the thumb wheel does not connect to these rollers). Do not feed the whole sheet into the printer. This can cause sensors to be broken when trying to remove the media.

While feeding the media look for the media as it comes up through to the exit area. Remove the Rapid Release Guide to see the exit area clearly. Look to see if it pushed out any scraps of paper or other debris.

The rapid release guide is when you open the exit cover, flip up the green plastic and there is another green plastic piece that you can remove. Remove it and see if you see any paper scraps. Inspect the rapid release guide for cracks or pieces of it missing. If it's broken, it's probably due to heat making the plastic brittle. You can order a new one from Xerox for a couple bucks.

That would have saved me much exploration into the innards of this magnificent machine if it had worked for me.

The piece of paper was in there really tight, but I got it out. I had to disassemble quite a bit to get in there though. No more jams ever though. Fed over 250 pages reliably. I'm stoked!

thanks alot for the tips!
