The documentation is not too clear on applying tbe new licences on the 8600. Appearently, even though the documentation says you don't have to, the license file has to be manually copied to the secondary CPU if you are not running in HA mode. Otherwise, on a CPU swap it will start up in basic operation mode.

8600 5.0.0.1 software. There are new licensing procedures for the 8600. You have to have an Advanced License to get BGPv4, IPv6, and PCAP features. There is also a premium license that adds VRF Lite, Multiprotocol BGP, MPLS and IP VPN Lite features.

If you have an existing maintenance contract with Nortel as of 7/1/08 for an 8600, you get a free Grandfathered Advanced Licence, tied to the base chassis MAC address.

Note that the Grandfathered license is only available until 7/1/09, so my advice is get it or lose it.
