Hello Guys when upgrading from 3.5.1 to 4.1 on 8600 , can I do a staight upgrade or do I need to go to an intermediate version first ??

Thanks in advance

Mucca

From the upgrade docs:

Supported upgrade paths
The Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 Release 4.1 supports upgrades from the following earlier releases:
• 3.5.x
• 3.7.x
• 4.0.x
Also, make sure you don't have any 8100 series modules in the chassis. You also need to have 256MB of RAM if you're using an 8690/8691 switch fabric.

Hi,

we planning to do this upgrade next Sunday, were upgrading two 8600 Chassis ( 4 CPU`s ) from version 3.5.1 to 4.1. This has been ran through Nortel via our vendors who have given us the thumbs up! The only point they came up with as biv343 mentioned, 256MB of Ram is needed.

Good luck.

I would strongly suggest you go straight to v4.1.6 if at all possible, Nortel just released v5.0 last week. The configuration files between 3.x and 4.x are not compatible so make sure you have backups of all your configurations prior to starting in case you need to back-off.

If you have 8692SFs you'll also want to reformat the flash drives on them so you can take full advantage of the 64Mb of space.

I believe you'll also need to re-configure your SNMP community strings and even perhaps the CLI usernames/passwords (you definitely will if you format the flash drives). Remember that you can upgrade your standby CPUs prior to any downtime.

Good Luck!

Big Thanks Guys , this is just what was needed .

FYI 4.1.6 has been pulled from the Nortel site. 4.1.5.4 is now recommended.

There is an instability issue with 4.1.6 causing it to be pulled.

Good points above guys !!

Big thanks to all

As a side note, when you go to 5.0 you'll have to reformat the internal flash all over again.
