I ran an 850' cable and am trying to get a laptop to talk to a broadband router for internet browsing only. Is there any simple (inexpensive) way to get a minimal signal across a run that length?

fiber for that length or two repeaters , one at 100 meters another at 200 meters .

might be easier just to move the router /modem

do you recommend a brand of repeater? I've been looking but can't find any.

a plain old 5 port switch will do it . or for a single device a hub would work just fine

(either way cheap)

not that I can think of unless you used power over ethernet from both ends

but you could probably do fiber cheaper .

hmmm, getting back into this run and adding power at 100m, 200m will be problematic. I though at one time I had seen something along the lines of an "ethernet extender" that pumped up the signal and allowed for runs longer than 100m. Anybody heard of anything like this?

The problem with running ethernet over longer distances is not just signal loss, but noise and cross talk as well.
Amping up the signal will only increase the problem of noise and cross talk.
I agree with skip555 above, fiber is the only real reliable alternative for a run of this length for "wired" connectivity.
You can look into a wireless connection to link your two ends together. Install an access point with an external antenna at the router side, and install an external wireless adapter at the computer side with an external antenna.
Works fine, lasts a long time. Paint it grey, it lasts forever.

If your looking for good conductivity and not a 100meg connection, I've used devices from Netsys.com, it can use 1 pair of Cat3 or 5 between units and converts back to ethernet at distant end, I've used these where it was impossible to run fiber between buildings.

Thnaks to all. I'll give the net-sys stuff a try and let you know how it works out.
