When I received the printer (used) it would display ENERGY STAR mode after inactivity. To hook it to my network, I had to reset the memory, clearing any prior settings.

I want to put it back into this mode for noise purposes but the only thing I can find in the manuals, web, etc., is how to make it go into stand-by mode (intelligent ready).

I know the printer had this ability because I have already seen it. I just don't know how the previous owners were able to do it.

Thanks for any insite.

There is a postscript snippet that you can down load off the xerox support website and then send to the printer that will put the printer into energy star mode. The name of the file is goto_stdby2.ps Energy star mode will occur after 1 hour in standby mode and will take less than 5 minutes to come back to ready and does not go through a head clean cycle.

Marty, that's not entirely accurate..
Energy Star mode will let the printhead cool down so far that it will actually need a cleaning purge.
Using standby mode keeps the head up to temperature, which shouldn't require a head purge when going back to ready mode.

This is the reason why Xerox / Tek didn't make the energy star mode easily available from the menus, but only through a postscript snippet. Because they knew they wouldn't have enough power under the energy star mode to keep the printhead up to temp. -> head purge would be needed -> customers complaining for cost of wased ink.
It's better to use the standby mode, which requires a little bit more power (200 watts) to keep the head on temperature. But in the end it's cheaper because you won't waste as much ink with the purge that's not needed.

One of my collegues made a calculation once, using european electricity prices. It would only be viable to let the machine go into energy star mode if the machine is going to be in it for >7 days. This because some ink will get purged during the warming up and cost you more than the 7 days of electricity for the standby mode would have done. (hope this makes sense :) )

This probably makes you wonder why Tektronix bothered to put the energy star mode on there at all, if it's not much of a use anyway.... pure marketing is the answer there. And I believe, but am not sure about this, that it's a requirement for office equipment in some countries.
