I've got an 8400dp with 256mb. I was thinking about going up to 512. On the Xerox website the cost for the 256mb is $1,389.00. I might as well get another printer!

Now here is where I get confused. So I go to non-Xerox websites to check on memory. I'm simply searching for memory for the printer by model to avoid my mistyping the type of memory. Quite a few websites (one of which I've used) have the memory for approx $90.

I understand that this is not made by Xerox. I can accept proprietary product being more costly. I am used to ink being more expensive. I've bought memory like this for other hardware with no problems in the past. What am I missing here? $1,389.00 versus $90.00???

Xerox did let me know that there would be no warranty issues. After all, if I had a problem, I would just remove it.

Do you all think this is odd? Am I missing something really critical here? Have you had any problems with 3rd party memory? Is this just a bad idea for this printer?

Thanks.

I have seen off the shelf memory work in these printers. chances are if it does not work there may be a problem booting up or it just won't recognize it and the config page will not display it installed. Like you said if this happens pull it out. I am wondering if the cost you showed was for an upgrade kit which may include a lower tray assy and maybe a hard drive along with the memory.

Thanks Marty. I spoke with Xerox and asked specifically if something else came with the memory- anything at all. Nope. Just the memory.

If you were wondering what Xerox told me...

I called back and spoke with a second person at Xerox. The first rep I spoke with said he usually does not recommend upgrading the memory because it generally does not make much of a difference. I have a tough time accepting that considering what I've seen. While I am happy with the 256mb that I have and am generally happy with the speed, a boost is a boost, right? I think he was just trying to keep me happy and subtly steering me away from the purchase.

The second person I spoke with really "towed the company line." He informed me about propietary products. He said that Xerox has looked into 3rd party memory and had not been happy with them. When they found memory that was comparable, he said it was generally about the same cost or more. At the prices I mentioned to him, he said that the memory is probable wrong or faulty- that was the only info I could get out of him. What I was hoping for was a spec difference that they've found or something that would tell me what the difference was with the Xerox memory.

They were both very nice, but you could hear in their voices the reluctance to suggest that anybody should pay that much for memory.

So for 1,389.00 you get just the memory, maybe some directions. There is no kit of any kind, no parts that come with it, nothing.

I think I might try the 3rd party. After all, the various sellers give you a money back guarantee and lifetime warranties.
